I’m going to revisit a concept from a president’s column a few months ago, but from a different angle. Juggling.
I mentioned the three ball cascade juggling pattern a few months ago. As I reflect on the pace of Hermandad’s work this year, I think of juggling clubs (sometimes called pins). Teaching juggling, I’d say learn to juggle balls first.
Clubs require more focus. To juggle clubs, you toss the club in the air, flicking your wrist for the spin and tossing to an adequate height, catching the club, and tossing it again. That’s all there is to it. Do each step for each club, and you’re juggling! When you’ve missed one of these steps, you start over. How can you find success? Like anything else. Practice.
After practicing enough times, something special happens. You start juggling longer before starting over. How does this happen? Yes, practice. Something else happens too. As I watch each club leave my hand and fulfill its role, the club slows down and grows easier to follow. I know they have not really slowed down, but my eyes follow the whole process better.
As we move forward seeking to fulfill our mission, Hermandad faces many needs that spin toward us. It could be tempting for any organization to throw up their hands. Our goal remains, we stay focused on the basic needs everyone has. We support our partners in Puerto Rico and celebrate their many successes. The changing certainty of existing resources casts challenges to everyone everywhere, on the island and beyond. The speed and spin of the need calls for attention. We have faith in the focus and experience of our partners. We also have faith in you. Your support helps us follow the motion. Our mission continues.
