During our recent trip, Jean and I rode in a Waymo. For those of you not familiar with the name, a Waymo is a driverless car. They come in a smaller model of Jaguar unless, I’m told, the rider has special mobility needs. Then, Chrysler products may be used.
Rolling along from Phoenix to Scottsdale, we felt a heightened awareness as the car adjusted to all road conditions. We had experienced the same sensation during our first Waymo ride about two weeks before. Passengers skirting the speed limit on the high side crept past as passengers pointed their mobile phones at our car. We even led a three car Waymo convoy during rush hour for a short time. I sat belted into the front passenger seat and observed the passing buildings and vegetation.
We slowed and sped up as needed. All seemed right with the world as we glided toward Scottsdale. Then, the car jerked to an open space one lane to the left. I turned to see a car behind us zipping across three lanes to our right at a 45˚ angle. Its path poured through the lane we had just vacated. Jean and I didn’t see it coming, but our Waymo sensed it carrying us to our destination in 24 minutes.
