As I write this, I am looking out my window and I see purple. First, violets fell into view, until mowing season. Then, a competition. Will the violets continue or will they fall to the mower blade? They’re holding their own around the edges, yet another purple has popped out. Irises. Multiple colors adorn the countryside, yet our yard has always had the purple bearded iris.

I anticipate the annual beauty of our purple irises. Years ago I took three spring trips. Driving through Tennessee, Ohio, and Michigan, I saw irises bloom for three consecutive months. Beauty in white, yellow, and purple irises expanded my awareness. I learned irises have up to 250 variations. All add to a spectacular landscape.

How special to see the dark winter fall away to beauty three times in one year. As I journeyed from place to place, life sprang out of darkness. Seeing the great need, whether in Puerto Rico or throughout the world, we might think of darkness as unrelenting. Funding cuts have cast people and places into a long dark winter of existence. Hermandad seeks to help others see spring’s hope looming on the horizon.

Variations add something special in many ways. During our last Hermandad board meeting, we voted to create an “Advancement Committee.” We invite you to join our committee meeting via Zoom as we take new steps forward in our mission. Share your ideas as we serve Puerto Rico together.

Thanks to our donors and sponsors, we have given more to Puerto Rico each year. As entities face funding uncertainties, we want to develop more resources. You can help us cast a light against a potential darker existence. Join us as, together, we usher in spring.
