On our recent trip to Boston, we enjoyed a few attractions in addition to the Red Sox game we attended with our past scholarship recipient. The home team won in the bottom of the ninth with a walk off home run.

Our day after the game proved much quieter. Sitting on a bench at one of the city’s iconic sites, many in the area seemed more locals than tourists. One local sat on the next bench, took a sip from his water bottle and struck up a conversation with us. He wanted to know where we were from and what brought us to Boston.

Jean and I had an opportunity to tell him some of our Hermandad story. Our new friend seemed genuinely interested as we sat and enjoyed the peace amidst this busy city. Then, he shared an unexpected detail about himself. He came there to meet his blind date.

As we listened to his story about how computer dating works, I thought of what a great location to meet. An iconic setting that had about as much safety as you could expect in a large city. Enough people around to see something out of the ordinary but far less than an intimidating crowd. Knowing the surroundings helps plan for success.

We at Hermandad strive to stay familiar with the surroundings we serve too. Through regular contacts on the ground, we uncover needs before they surface. Our investment in what we do has gone far past a first meeting. We continue to learn of new needs and explore possible ways we can help through our regular visits and planning meetings. Our new friend knew his surroundings and stood ready to move forward as he undertook his goal. His awaited date did arrive.

As Hermandad continues to serve the people of Puerto Rico, our date continues to arrive. Glad to have you as a partner. Donate now.
