“Thinking outside the box.” We view thinking outside the box as a phrase suggesting innovation. You gaze at the norm and catch a vision of something better. Perhaps you saw it as out of reach until it stood there and stared back at you. You uncover new ways to progress.
Hermandad started with an outside the box thought. Maybe $1,000 is enough to start something for good. In 2019, we transformed my nonprofit counseling practice to something new. As Hermandad, our work grows in scope and ambition.
But what comes beyond outside the box? Perhaps, we could move from outside the box to outside the warehouse. Escaping the boundaries of a smaller nonprofit in a smaller box, we keep pushing against walls striving to do more.
Stepping away from the warehouse, I took a passing thought as a possibility. During a telephone conversation, I had an outside the warehouse moment: an endowment fund. When I first heard the idea, my thoughts left me in the box as to how could we start it this close to our modest beginnings? Our birth seven years ago unfolded with $1,000. Thanks to all who joined our mission we grew far beyond that.
