During a long weekend away, I watched a cyclist on his battery powered bike slide as his wheels left the ground. He failed to adjust his speed for his move from the concrete path to the sandy beach. We always need to hold an awareness of our surroundings for whatever we face.
In the last week, we have seen stories that tell glimpses of some of Puerto Rico’s long term trials. At Hermandad, we have engaged to help meet the present and future needs throughout our seven year history. We see this as our calling and hold our focus on needs as they occur.
While Puerto Rico has experienced a drought, there’s more to the the story. Damaged pipes leak and still require repair. Our island partners report almost half of the water fails to reach citizens due to failed infrastructure. One citizen has gone without water for over 80 days. Island residents assert that TV and radio reports give highlights without details.
Knowing the islands’ backstory tells the tale of years of infrastructure neglect even before Hurricane Maria in 2017. The people of Puerto Rico have faced challenges getting help for longterm problems. Electrical grid needs linger with reports customers pay more for electricity without improved services.
Over the last two months, Hermandad donated $2,800 to entities helping the Puerto Rican people. We celebrate our opportunities yet know more is needed. As recent news highlights the ongoing effects of increased water and electrical rationing and electrical outages, Hermandad has stayed engaged.
We remain committed to the needs of the Puerto Rican people.
